Here is your morning brief for Thursday, January 22nd. I'm Luke Vargas for The Wall Street Journal. As day four of Davos gets underway, we're learning more about what future negotiations over Greenland could look like after President Trump backed off of threats to forcibly acquire the island and called off the tariffs he promised on European nations.
European officials say the deal could involve Denmark allowing American troops to be stationed at its Greenland bases, more Arctic security, and potentially the U.S. getting a right of first refusal on investments in Greenland's mineral resources. Back in the U.S., Vice President J.D.
Vance is scheduled to visit Minnesota today to meet with local leaders and community members amid escalating tensions over immigration enforcement. At the same time, ICE is ramping up enforcement operations in Maine, setting up a familiar dynamic pitting the state's Democratic elected officials against federal agents.
Maine has some of the lowest numbers of undocumented immigrants, but has seen an influx of migrants in recent years and is home to significant numbers of African refugees.
Chapter 2: What are the latest developments regarding the Greenland Framework?
And our annual airline rankings are out, and Delta has lost its crown after a four-year winning streak. This year's winner is Southwest Airlines, which had the fewest customer complaints and tarmac delays. The losers are American Airlines and Frontier, both of whom had serious reliability problems.
Airlines in 2025 faced a wave of flight cancellations sparked by the government shutdown and a lack of air traffic controllers. Asian stocks have ended the day mostly higher. European stocks are up in midday trading, recouping some of the losses after Trump backtracked on his tariff threats. and U.S.
