TNB Tech Minute: Pentagon Officially Labels Anthropic a Supply-Chain Risk
05 Mar 2026
Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Here's your afternoon TNB Tech Minute for Thursday, March 5. I'm Danny Lewis for The Wall Street Journal. The Defense Department has officially told Anthropic it is a supply chain risk and will be cut off from partners who work with the Pentagon, following through on a threat to escalate its battle with the artificial intelligence company.
A senior Pentagon official said the Defense Department formally notified Anthropix leadership that the company and its AI tools present security threats that require an action normally reserved for businesses from foreign adversaries. The move could have far-reaching consequences for Anthropix partners and investors, including Lockheed Martin, Amazon.com, and Google.
Anthropix said last week it would challenge the designation in court. Canada says OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has agreed to take immediate steps to strengthen safety protocols regarding notifying police about potentially suspicious use of the company's ChatGPT chatbot.
Chapter 2: What supply chain risks did the Pentagon associate with Anthropic?
The Canadian government is seeking changes to how OpenAI and other digital platforms operate following reporting from the Wall Street Journal that indicated company employees raised alarm bells about interactions with ChatGPT last year, involving an individual whom police identified last month as a suspect in a fatal school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
An OpenAI spokesperson said the company is committed to working with the Canadian government. News Corp, owner of The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires, has a content licensing partnership with OpenAI. Netflix has acquired Interpositive, an artificial intelligence filmmaking technology company founded by Ben Affleck.
Interpositive's entire team will join Netflix as part of the acquisition, with Affleck staying on as a senior advisor, the streaming giant said today. Financial terms weren't disclosed. Interpositive is building AI tools designed to preserve human creative control over the filmmaking process, Affleck said, adding that the tool has restraints built in to protect creative intent.
