Yr Hen Iaith

Yr Hen Iaith (Lefel A) - Martha, Jac, a Sianco

23 Mar 2025

Description

Trafodwn Martha, Jac a Sianco yn y bennod hon, gan graffu ar y modd y mae’r nofel yn darlunio ochr dywyll bywyd gwledig. Dadleuwn fod hyd yn oed yr agweddau mwyaf ysgytwol ar y nofel yn adlewyrchu realiti a bod y gwaith dewr hwn yn mynd yn groes i ffrwd o lenyddiaeth Gymraeg sy’n dyrchafu, rhamantu a delfrydu bywyd yr amaethwr. Rhyfeddwn at grefft Caryl Lewis wrth i ni graffu ar y cymeriadu a’r strwythur. Er bod cymaint o realiti caled yn y nofel, nodwn fod elfennau sy’n mynd yn groes i realaeth hefyd wrth i’r darllenydd brofi agweddau swreal neu hudol. Awgrymwn fod naws gothig hefyd a’i bod yn bosibl gweld cysgod ‘Mami’ fel fersiwn gwyrdroëdig o’r ‘Fam Gymreig’ ystrydebol. * We discuss Martha, Jac a Sianco in this episode, scrutinizing how the novel depicts the dark side of rural life. We find that even the most shocking aspects of the novel reflect reality and that this courageous work goes against a stream of Welsh literature that elevates, romanticises and idealises the life of the farmer. We praise Caryl Lewis's craft as we scrutinize the character and structure. While there is so much hard reality in the novel, we note that there are also elements that conflict with realism as the reader experiences surreal or magical aspects. We suggest that there is also a gothic feel to it and that it is possible to see the shadow of 'Mami' as an inverted version of the stereotypical 'Welsh Mam'.
