韓半島の南部、全羅南道(チョルラナ厶ド)高興(コフン)の沖合には、その形が小鹿のように見えるということで、「小鹿島(ソロクト)」と名づけられた島があります。 小鹿島は、そのかわいらしい名前からは想像できない悲痛な歴史を秘めています。その悲痛な歴史は、韓国が日本による植民地支配下にあった1916年、朝鮮総督府がここ小鹿島にハンセン病患者を収容するための病院を開設し、患者を強制移住、強制隔離した時から始まります。 かつて「天刑の地」と呼ばれ、差別された小鹿島の悲しい過去を振り返ります。
