夏天的时候，蝉的鸣叫声音确实震耳欲聋，一些个头较大的甚至可以发出超过120分贝的声音，在距离足够近、时间足够长的情况下，把人类耳朵震聋绰绰有余。这么大的声音，蝉会不会把自己震聋呢？答案是不会。不管雄蝉还是雌蝉，它们腹部那有一对巨大的镜状薄膜，叫做鼓膜，起着耳朵的作用。鼓膜通过短肌腱与听觉器官相连。当雄性唱歌时，肌腱会收缩，使鼓膜放松，产生折叠。在折叠的情况下，鼓膜的紧张程度下降，对声音的灵敏度下降约20分贝，蝉还是可以听到自己发出的声音的。虽然听到的声音还是很大，但至少不会把鼓膜振坏了。
