龙卷风是一种强烈的、小范围的空气涡旋，是在强烈不稳定天气条件下，由空气强烈对流运动产生的，通常是由雷暴云伸展至地面的漏斗云产生的强烈旋风。龙卷中心气压很低，中心风力可达每秒100—200米以上，具有极大的破坏力。龙卷风是空气里的旋涡。在发展强烈的积雨云中，空气扰动很厉害，里面温度、 湿度、风向和风速差别很大。例如，下沉气流风速往往达8级以上，而上升风速一般只有3～4级，这就使得积雨云内部空气扰动剧烈，产生旋转作用，当旋转作用增大到一定程度时，就形成了龙卷风。还有，上下温度相差悬殊，冷空气急速下降，热空气猛烈上升，上下层空气交替扰动，形成许多小旋涡。这些小旋涡逐渐扩大，上下激荡越发厉害，终于形成了大旋涡，也会形成龙卷风。
