新加坡科技研究局（A*STAR）Lisa F P Ng领衔的研究团队在顶级医学期刊《柳叶刀》上发表重要研究成果。他们发现，在疫情早期曾出现了一个缺失382个核苷酸，ORF8不能转录的病毒变种，这个突变类型的病毒与野生型相比，复制能力没有下降，但是毒性却大幅降低，感染者全身释放的促炎细胞因子较少，而且症状更轻。
