近期，美国佛罗里达州卫生部（DOH）对外发出警告称，佛罗里达州希尔斯堡县确诊了一例罕见的食脑变形虫病例。感染病人的是一种真核生物，学名福氏耐格里虫（Naegleria fowleri）。 它们通常生活在25摄氏度以上的温水环境中，高温的夏季是其最活跃的时期。如果不小心将其吸入鼻腔中，福氏耐格里虫便会在找不到食物来源的情况下沿着嗅觉神经进入脑部，进而引发死亡率极高的“福氏耐格里阿米巴脑膜脑炎”
