在到功德林去会见弘一法师的路上，怀着似乎从来不曾有过的洁净的心情；也可以说带着渴望，不过与希冀看一出著名的电影剧等的渴望并不一样。弘一法师就是李叔同先生，我最初知道他在民国初年；那时上海有一种《太平洋报》，其艺术副刊由李先生主编，我对于所载他的书画篆刻都中意。以后数年，听人说李先生已出家，在西湖某寺。游西湖时，在西泠印社石壁上见李先生的“印藏”。去年子恺先生刊印《子恺漫画》。丏尊先生给他作序文，说起李先生的生活，我才知道得详明一点；就从这时起，知道李先生现称弘一了。于是，不免向子恺先生询问关于弘一法师的种种。承他详细见告。十分感兴趣之余，自然来了见一见的愿望，便向子恺先生说起了。“好的，待有机缘，我同你去见他。”子恺先生的声调永远是这样朴素而真挚的。以后遇见子恺先生，就常常告诉我弘一法师的近况。记得有一次给我看弘一法师的来信，中间有“叶居士”云云，我看了很觉惭愧，虽然“居士”不是什么特别的尊称。
