有時候求快快死亡比求活著更是這些軍伕的願望。戰爭後期補給不易，他們開始吃野草，取水時擔心遇空襲。再後來瘧疾等疾病出現，戰地醫院裡只有紅藥水，繃帶重覆使用，骨折擦傷或發燒都只能用紅藥水塗一塗。更後期他們開始吃人肉。
