太宰治は昭和１０年、２６歳の夏に千葉県船橋へ転居します。盲腸炎をこじらせ鎮痛剤中毒になっており、その静養のためでした。地方の名家に生まれ育ち、自尊心の高かった若き太宰にとっては失意からの回復の日々だったと思われます。近所から頂いて庭に植えた夾竹桃は、この作品のみならず太宰の関連作にたびたび登場します。夾竹桃の花が咲くのは夏で、今も船橋市民ホールの前庭に残っているそうです。 It is a recitation read in beautiful Japanese with correct pronunciation.
