菊池寛は大学を卒業後に新聞社の社会部で記者を務めながら、作家としての道を模索していました。これは「恩讐の彼方に」を発表し、新聞社をやめ職業作家として活動を始めた大正１０年の作品です。島原遊郭の底辺で生きる女のおこした心中事件を通じて、若い検事が社会の生々しい現実を目の当たりにします。新聞記者としての経験が存分に生かされ、細部のリアリティが重厚感を生み出しています。
