光学望远镜的原理其实就是尽可能地把可见光通过各种透镜汇聚在一起成像,这样就可以让人类看到肉眼无法直接觉察的可见光。因此决定光学望远镜能看的多远基本上取决于口径,口径越大则能收集到更多的光线,更多的光线汇聚起来,就能把更远的物体成像。随着人类对光的本质认识的飞跃,人们终于发现了光本质上其实是一种电磁波,而可见光只是处在一个特殊频段的电磁波而已,这个频段的电磁波可以被人类的肉眼所察觉。那么可见光频段之外的电磁波其实也是一种光,只不过是一种不可见光,不可见光也同样能够成像,只需要通过特殊的技术手段做些处理就行了。我们在医院里面看到的各种X光片,就可以清晰地把皮肤下面的骨骼显示出来,X光就是一种不可见光,是一种电磁波。宇宙中的天体除了发出可见光以外,其实还发出大量的不可见光,也就是各种频率的电磁波,那么通过探测这些电磁波,我们不但能够成像,还能够发现很多意想不到的东西。一种叫做射电望远镜的新型望远镜终于在20世纪30年代被发明出来了,它将给整个天文学研究带来革命的狂风暴雨。
