相传在清朝光绪年间，有姓金的一家人在沈阳北门里开设烧饼铺谋生。因为经营不善，生意一直不好。一日正值中秋节，生意更加萧条，时至中午尚不见食客上门，店主茫然，遂将铁匣内几枚铜钱取出，买了些牛肉回家剁成肉馅，将烧饼面擀成薄皮，一折一叠地包拢起来，准备自家过节食用。这时，从外面忽然进来一位差人，进店见锅中所烙食品造型新奇，一经品尝，品味甚佳。这位差人当即告诉店主，再烙一盒送往馆驿，众人食后齐声叫绝。此后，这种食品一时名声大振，官民争相购买，生意日趋兴隆，故而取名“回头”。
