亚里士多德不把测量和计算中的问题认为是发展能够产生定量预言的物理的阻碍,他反而基于在智慧上投其所好的原则上建立起他的物理学。当亚里士多德的结论和观察的极显著差别不能被忽视时,他的确去调整结论。可是那些调整通常只是特别解释,不管他的理论多少严重地偏离实际,他总是能改变之恰好似乎足以摆脱其冲突。为了解释物体在下落时很清楚地增加速率,他发明了新的原理⸺当物体靠近其静止的自然地方时,它更喜悦地前进,也就是加速。尽管亚里士多德理论通常只有很小预言价值,他的科学方法支配了⻄方思想界几乎两千年之久。
