粤语里面形容一个人做事拖拖拉拉，硬是做不完或者赖死不肯走，就会称之为“磨烂席”，例如打通宵麻将打得大家都困了，但有一个人硬是不肯认输收摊，你就可以骂他磨烂席。那么为什么赖死不走叫磨烂席呢？原来，以前在街头巷尾开赌的人，往往会铺一张草席在地上，而赌具就放在草席之上，一旦遇到警察过来巡查，就方便马上卷起来跑路。那这张草席用得多了，自然容易磨得烂烂残残，而那些赌输了赖着不肯走还想继续翻盘的赌徒，因为整天在草席边上蹭来蹭去，就被称为磨烂席了。
