刮龙这个词，源自于清朝晚期。清朝原来的货币体系是以白银为主要流通货币，但后来鸦片贸易造成了白银外流，而国门大开之后也造成大量国外的银元流入，对当时中国的货币体系造成了很大的冲击。眼看着外来的鹰洋、佛银等等流通越来越广，清政府也开始铸造银元，以稳定自己的货币和经济，这些银元都是以龙作为图案，所以被称为“龙洋”，在当时是非常受欢迎的硬通货。所谓“刮龙”，顾名思义，就是搜刮龙洋，也就是搜刮掠夺金钱的意思了。
