芥菜是广东人经常食用的蔬菜之一，一般认为有清热的功效，对于怕“热气”的广东人来说是非常健康的蔬菜品种。芥菜一般在春季开始栽种，到了秋季，也就是大概九到十月份，就会孕蕾结出花心，粤语里面称为“起心”。而“起心”这个词在粤语里面也有对异性感兴趣、思春的意思，于是就诞生了一个歇后语，叫“十月芥菜——起晒心”了。不过这个词通常用来形容女性对男性起意，很少用来形容男性对女性感兴趣的。大概是因为女生性成熟比较早，而结出花心这个状况也比较适宜用于形容女性吧。
