大家都知道，猫的胡须很有用，据说可以用来量度宽度，看看自己钻不钻得过窄处，所以对于猫来说很重要。以前在农村，冬天的时候，猫为了取暖，晚上都喜欢钻进熄了火的灶炉里，到了天亮主人起来烧火做饭，猫就会马上跑开，否则一点火，不但猫须被烧，逃得慢分分钟烧死。一般来讲，老猫经验丰富比较少出危险，小猫有时贪睡就容易出事故，如果经验老到的老猫也把须给烧了，那就实在是太不小心了。所以粤语里面，就用“老猫烧须”，来形容经验丰富的老手，因为大意犯了新手的错误。
