8月12日是世界大象日，云南普洱、西双版纳的“大象食堂”陆续开张。大象食堂是相关地方政府根据实际情况，以每亩补助200元的方式，鼓励农民在因大象侵扰而撂荒的土地上，分时段、分季节种植大象喜欢吃的玉米、芭蕉和棕叶芦等。如果农作物被亚洲象取食，就由保险公司给予相应的保险补偿，如果没有被取食，农户可自行收割。这也是缓解大象栖息地食物短缺的一种方式。
