Good morning everyone and welcome to our board meeting of December fifth, twenty twenty-three. And I'm sure uh many of you have seen uh today's agenda. We have a very full uh morning, a lot of recognitions, a lot of things to celebrate uh this morning. But before we do that, uh we are going to begin uh with a moment of silence, uh to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, and before those are ebble. Uh I asked to rise for a moment of silence. Before that, I'm gonna ask my colleagues if they have anyone that they would like to keep in uh our thoughts and prayers this morning. And I'm gonna begin. Uh by sadly uh asking us to remember uh Travis Trainum uh and his family. Uh Travis was with our Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department uh and was with Relief Battalion 8 B Shift.
Uh sadly passed away on Thanksgiving Day. Uh he passed away in an activity unrelated to his fire and rescue department work, uh, but passed away in response. Richmond was a valuable member of our Fairfax County Fire Department since 2004 and will be greatly missed. If we could please keep Travis's friends and family in our thoughts and prayers, as well as uh his Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department family, who also is uh dealing with this very challenging uh loss of life. And uh also, uh as the board is aware We did have a tragic juvenile car crash on November 20th on Pioneer Lane. And since that accident, we now learn that one of the young people passed away as a result of injuries sustained in that crash, and two remain hospitalized in very serious conditions, so we ask that we keep their family and our thoughts and prayers as we progress as well.
With that, I'm happy to recognize any other supervisors who have anyone they would like to mention. Seeing and hearing none uh at this time if we could all rise for a moment of silence to be followed by the pledge of allegiance.
And please face the flag. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.
And this morning we have uh three presentations today uh to do before uh we recognize uh outgoing uh s uh retiring um bo members of our board of supervisors. But we also have a lot of uh legislators and school board members who are also retiring that we're gonna recognize this morning. Uh before we do that, uh we have a few other presentations and just as a reminder, I will announce that. the proclamation and invite our speaker, uh designated speaker down to the podium. If there is anyone here with the speaker who would like to join them, they are welcome to join them at the podium at that time. After we read the proclamation and after our speaker's remarks, we will pose for a picture from the dais.
And our first recognition this morning is a resolution to recognize the McLean High School girls' softball team for their state championship. And this was requested by myself, Supervisor Faust, and Supervisor Palchig. Our speaker today is Maurice Towill, coach of the McLean High School girls' softball team. If you could come on down, uh and it looks like a lot of members of the team here this morning. Morning. And again, anyone who's here with you that would like to join you uh down at the podium is welcome to do so. And while you are coming down, I am gonna recognize Supervisor Faust for resolution.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Mr. Chairman, I move the following resolution. Whereas the McLean High School girls' softball team won the Virginia Class Six State Championship Tournament Crown, just the second state championship in the team's history. And whereas due to conditions that delayed the first round contest, the McLean Highlanders played three state playoff games in just 28 hours, including one that went into extra innings to take home the championship. And whereas the championship is a testament to the hard work of these student athletes, the guidance of their coaches and staff, and the support of the community. And whereas these impressive achievements bring honor to the individual athletes, their coaches, and their school.
