Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our Board of Supervisors meeting of December 3, 2024. And we're going to begin our meeting in a moment, as we always do, with a moment of silence to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. But before those are able to rise for that, we do want to recognize some folks in our community that we want to keep in our thoughts and prayers. And as soon as I'm finished, I'm going to ask my colleagues if they would like to be recognized as well. And first, I want to recognize Jenny Ju, who passed away in October. Services for her were held last week. Jenny was best known as the creator of the National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which is celebrated annually in the month of May throughout the United States.
McDonald's Corporation selected her to be the face of its first I Am Asian APA Heritage Month website. She was a consultant to many federal government agencies, embassies, universities, and national organizations of matters relating to women and Asian Pacific Americans. Among her many honors and awards was she was the 2011 Springfield Lady Fairfax, was past chair of the Fairfax County Commission for Women, and was also a former national chair and president of the Organization of Chinese American Women. And as I mentioned, she passed away in October. Services were already held, but if we could keep Jenny and her family and those who were affected by the work that she did in our thoughts and prayers, that would be appreciated.
Secondly, I'm sad to announce that Tom Johnson passed away on November 19, 2024. In his words, he said, he had a wonderful 67 years and couldn't have asked for more. Tom was born on April 20, 1957 in Gardner, Maine, was the fifth of six children. He was a longtime volunteer with the Braddock Dems and FCDC and was known as much more than that. He was known for his love of travel and adventure and ability to light up every room that he was in. I know many of us on the board knew him personally. His proudest accomplishment was his marriage and partnership with Susan, along with the family they created. He's survived by his wife Susan and their children Michael, And Michael is a proud member of our Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
Olivia and Owen and six grandchildren, Lucas, Phoenix, Francis, Kit, River, and Sirin. And Supervisor Walkinshaw and I were able to attend his service last week, his celebration of life last week, and even learned a lot more things about Tom and the work that he did in the community. And then finally, I want to acknowledge the passing of Marco. Marco was a K-9 in our Fairfax County Explosive Ordnance Disposal K-9 unit at the police department from 2011 to 2019. And Marco protected attendees at numerous special events and served during national security sweeps. He was known for his calm demeanor and being a good dog and passed away on November 24th. And I mention Marco because I think many times we forget the tremendous role that our canines play in protecting our community.
And in particular, I know we forget how important they are as a family member for the handler, in our police department, as well as so many in our department that are inspired by the work that these service animals do throughout Fairfax County. And so if we could keep Marco and our Fairfax County Police Department, especially the canine unit, in our thoughts and prayers. And with that, I would recognize any of my other colleagues who would like to say a few words. And I'm going to start on this side, this time Supervisor Walkinshaw.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman, and appreciate your mentioning Tom Johnson. It was a real loss for the Braddock District. And Tom was one of those people who had such a joy for life. And at his celebration of life, we talked about the things that he loved, his family, his community. He was one of those people in Red Fox Forest, great neighborhood in the Braddock District, who was always there to support his neighbors and help his neighbors. You mentioned his son. michael who's a fairfax county firefighter also a braddock district resident and his daughter olivia a braddock district resident as well the johnsons are very close friends of mine so it's a terrible loss but but was really special that we were able to come together and celebrate his life last week thank you mr chairman
