Good morning. Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our board meeting of February twentieth, twenty twenty four. And we are gonna begin our meeting as we always do, uh, with a moment of silence to be followed by the pre pledge of allegiance. And before we rise uh for that, I'm gonna ask my colleagues if they have anyone that they would like to keep in their thoughts and prayers uh this morning, and I'm gonna mention uh A couple and then uh turn to my colleagues first. Um I think all of us have learned uh sadly that the former Fairfax mayor John Mason uh passed away on February 7th at the age of 89, and he served on the Fairfax City Council from 1986 to 1990, and as mayor uh from 1990 until 2002. Uh served in the United States
United States Army completing two tours in Vietnam and retired as a colonel. Uh following his retirement he served as vice president at SAIC and director of the Transportation Policy and Analysis Center. Uh he also served, as we know, on many regional boards and commissions over four decades. Uh his impact is felt well beyond Fairfax City's borders uh through his leaderships of many organizations such as the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia. Uh Mason is survived by his wife of sixty years, Jeanette Mason and their four adult children, uh John, Jonna, and Jeffrey, and his four uh grandchildren as well. And so if we could keep uh John Mason
Uh friends in the city of Fairfax and our thoughts and prayers. He was a uh giant not just for the city but also very uh involved in regional and county initiatives as well. Um and I believe uh information about his services um have been circulated or at least posted uh for board members. Uh secondly, um and this one is a a shock to me and I think it will be a shock to a lot of my colleagues. Uh But Catherine Riley passed away and Catherine of course worked for the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. uh for over thirty five years. and and s as recently as working heavily in our efforts to attract the FBI uh to Fairfax County. And so it was just shocking uh to hear that news, especially since w I just felt like I had just met with her uh not long ago on the on the FBI issues.
Uh Catherine not only served the EDA uh for a long distinguished career, most recently as senior vice president, but she also served on numerous regional, state and international economic development councils, including British American Business Association. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, George Mason University Honors College, Dean's Advisory Board, the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, and Leadership Fairfax. And I think all of us uh saw Kathy involved in just about everything. Uh so if we could keep uh Kathy, uh her family and our friends at the EDA uh in our thoughts and prayers, uh that would be appreciated. And then finally, I think we all watched in horror what happened in neighboring uh Loudoun County with the house explosion and sadly the the loss of a volunteer firefighter with the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company.
But you know, that incident uh had many victims, not just the firefighter whose whose life was taken, but many injuries as well as those Who owned the property and people in the neighborhood who, of course, were traumatized by the event. We know that 11 first responders, including firefighter Brown and two civilians, were taken to the hospital with varying injuries after the devastating explosion. I also want to thank our own fire and rescue team who were involved in the response and on the scene. uh to see what had happened and to provide as much support as possible uh to our partners in Loudoun County. This was a a devastating event and certainly Um took a toll on our own firefighters to see that amount of devastation, uh to lose a partner in public safety who was volunteering but but most importantly who put his life ahead of others to try to uh respond to a call.
Uh so if we could keep the Loudoun County, uh especially the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company, as well as our own uh fire and rescue uh folks who responded or who were affected uh by the loss of that firefighter in our thoughts and prayers, I would uh appreciate that as well.
