Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our board meeting of February 17th, 2026. And we're going to begin our meeting, as we always do, with a moment of silence to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. But before we rise for a moment of silence, I'm going to share about a few folks that we've lost and, of course, asked my colleagues to weigh in as well. And unfortunately, the list is long. And some of these are very close individuals to some of us on the board and certainly close to why the county is the success story that it is. And I'm going to begin with the one that has shocked us all, which is yesterday, the passing of former supervisor Mike Fry. And Mike represented the Sully District on the board from 1991 to 2015.
And we know prior to his election, he worked for both Chairman Herity, Jack Herity, and Springfield District Supervisor Elaine McConnell, serving Fairfax County and its residents for a total of 37 years. He was a friend of mine for 37 years, which is hard to believe. Of course, we know about all that Mike did on this board. But Mike had a love of some things that Many of us on this dais also have a love for, first, a love for the county. When he finished his 37 years, he never stopped serving this county. And he never stopped serving this county in so many ways. We shared a love of youth sports. And Mike was heavily involved in our youth sports community and remained heavily involved in it, not just as a supervisor, but after he left this board.
And of course, we know that the animal shelter right around the corner from here is named in Mike's honor for all the work that he did promoting animal welfare. And I think the humanity of Mike cannot be understated. We're all in shock today to hear this news. I do know that there will be opportunities in the future for us to memorialize and to celebrate the life that Mike Fry lived, and we're looking forward to being able to announce those in the future. And of course, We will have Channel 16 compile a tribute video to Mike as they do when we lose colleagues on this board. And unfortunately, we have lost too many of them lately with both Jerry Hyland, Jerry Connolly, Supervisor Hudgens, and now Supervisor Mike Fry.
You know, I just met with Mike a week or so ago on work that he was doing on the animal shelter. And, of course, he was as vibrant and as active as always. showing up with his Phillies shirt on, which was a reminder to all of us that none of us are perfect. Mike was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, and I think showed up always celebrating that. But what I will remember Mike as a dear friend, somebody that I talk to often, Somebody who I always look forward to every year playing together in the animal shelter golf tournament that he had a passion for. Texting me and emailing me about college sports and youth sports and who he had won a lunch from and who he wanted to bet on a sports game with. But Mike did so much for this county and it's just a shock.
that he has left us far too soon with so much more to give to the community. And so as I mentioned before, we will make sure we share plans with the county. about ways that we can pay tribute to Mike as we move forward. And before I go through the rest of these, I'm going to ask if anyone else would like to weigh in on the passing of Supervisor Frey and, of course, our current Sully District Supervisor and Supervisor Herity. Supervisor Smith.
It was such a shock to find this out yesterday. Mike was the supervisor when I was on the school board.
We had a great relationship. But his service to the community and what he has done for this community and ensuring that there were ball fields for kids and And after he left the board, I asked him to serve as chair of our Dulles Suburban Task Force for the Comprehensive Plan. He said yes right away. But it's the Sully Historic Site. It's his involvement with animals. He used to have Great Danes, and then he decided to start adopting animals that nobody else would adopt. Um, just as a commitment, I had so many things I wanted to say, and it's just, it's just hard.
