Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our board meeting of January 14th, 2025. We are going to begin this morning's meeting, as we always do, with a moment of silence to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. And before those are able to rise for that, I'm going to recognize my colleagues for anyone they'd like to keep in our thoughts and prayers. And I apologize ahead of time. I have a pretty long list. The board has been out for a little while, so if we could just have a little patience here this morning as we get through these, that would be appreciated. I do need to mention a few folks that we've lost since we last met. I want to start with George Alloway. George was the husband of Leanne, father of David, grandfather of Eleonora, was an Army veteran, 20-year airline pilot, 20-year federal government employee and community leader,

who passed away in November at the age of 83. And those of us from the Franconia area, of course, know George really well from his many, many years of service on the Virginia Hills Civic Association, including all the work that he did on transportation matters to improve pedestrian and transportation safety in and around his community. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request donations be made in George's honor to the Wounded Warriors Foundation, and if we could keep the Alloways in our thoughts and prayers, that would be appreciated. Secondly, I want to mention that we lost Suk Kim. Suk Kim was a county resident. Many folks may have heard about Suk Kim because of the news that traveled very quickly about his loss.

He was an animal rescuer who died when the plane he was piloting crashed on November 24th. He was on a mission carrying three dogs from Maryland to upstate New York. Two of those dogs did survive the crash. Sadly, Suk did not. He began flying during the pandemic and turned his passion for animals into a rescue. operation, working with a nonprofit to rehome dogs. Suk was a champion for others, a friend to all, and a deeply loved member of his family. He loved to cook, was an avid baseball fan, and above all, he loved his family with all of his being. His spirit, generous heart, endless capacity will be profoundly missed by his wife Anna, their children, his mother and extended family, as well as all those involved in his rescue

animal rescue operations. We also lost Pat McDonald. And those of us who have been around for a while, I see some people who are acknowledging that. New Pat. Pat passed away on November 7th of 2024. He began working in Fairfax County in 1967 as a budget analyst and quickly rose through the ranks to become the Deputy County Executive of Budget and Planning. in 1976 at the age of 34. Under his tenure, Pat supervised the creation, installation, and operation of the financial management and administrative structure that resulted in the county obtaining its AAA bond rating in 1975, a huge feat, especially at that time. We are all grateful for the financial legacy that Pat created, which remains the backbone of our current strong fiscal position

here in Fairfax County. And our condolences go to his wife, Ann, and to the rest of his family. And Pat was one of those people who we all knew, but I don't think many people in the county knew the profound long-term effect he has had and the benefits that we enjoy today because of his great work with the county staff and with the budget. Next, I want to mention Susan Jonas. Susan passed away on December 31st, surrounded by family. After her first diagnosis of cancer in 1991, Susan decided to stay home to raise her family full time. In doing that, she became a community volunteer, taught English as a second language, and worked in several different libraries, including the Folger Shakespeare Library.

She served on the boards of New Hope Housing. which is near and dear to us in Fairfax County, and the Davidson College Alumni Association. Her favorite volunteer activity was serving at the Burgundy Farm Country Day School, where her children went to school for 16 years and her daughter Emily is now a schoolteacher.
