Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our board meeting of June 24, 2025. And we're going to begin our meeting, as we always do, with keeping folks in our thoughts and prayers to be followed by a moment of silence and to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. And before we do that, I'm just going to make an announcement and then mention a few folks to keep in our thoughts and prayers, and then I'll recognize my colleagues. First, given, and many people have probably already seen this, but I just want to reiterate this, given Fairfax County's proximity to our nation's capital, the Fairfax County Police Department is in regular communication with our surrounding law enforcement agencies to include federal law enforcement.

And these lines of communication are meant to ensure our region and our residents' safety. With recent U.S. military strikes in the Middle East, the Fairfax County Police Department will increase police presence at certain locations to include religious institutions and known public gatherings. This is being done out of an abundance of caution as there are no known threats to Fairfax County at this time. But I do want to thank our chief and our leadership and the police department for their proactive approach to this and making sure that people understand that our public safety is number one, especially in these challenging times. And nobody does that better than the Fairfax County Police Department.

So I want to thank them for that. Secondly, we all know that a week and a half ago we were shocked by the news and the assassination and attempted assassination of two Minnesota state legislators and their spouses. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman suffered multiple gunshot wounds and after undergoing surgery are currently recovering. Unfortunately, Speaker of the Minnesota House, Delegate Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, did not survive this attack. And these hit close, certainly to us as elected officials, but they are appalling and unacceptable in a nation where our political differences do not make us enemies, but participants in our efforts to form a more perfect

And I just want to pass along my condolences on behalf of the board. to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Hortman, and our prayers to Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman as they make a full recovery. There's many sacrifices people make to serve the public, and certainly elected officials make those sacrifices every day. But our safety, the safety of our families, should never be at risk. And I do also want to thank Again, our police department for some of the reach out that they did to our state legislative lawmakers who live in Fairfax County and many of us elected officials just for the reassurance of what we can do to protect our own safety. And then finally, and sadly, on June 9th, Mr. Conrad Egan, former Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority Chair, passed away peacefully at his home in Oakton.

Mr. Egan was a close friend of mine, I think a close friend to a lot of people in this auditorium, but he was a giant in the affordable housing industry. having served for decades in leadership positions at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Millennial Housing Commission, and the National Housing Conference. He also held leadership roles with the Community Preservation and Development Corporation, the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance, AHOME, Housing Virginia, and Fairfax County's Initiative to Prevent and End Homelessness. As an FCRHA Chair from 2000 to 2008, Mr. Egan oversaw a period of renewed commitment to housing affordability in our community, including the implementation of the Penny for Affordable Housing Fund, as well as the County's Affordable Housing Preservation Initiative.
