Good morning everyone and welcome to our board meeting of March 5th 2024 and we are going to begin our meeting in a moment with a moment of silence to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance but as we always do before we rise for a moment of silence I'm going to ask my colleagues if they have anyone that they would like to keep in their thoughts and prayers, and I will just start by acknowledging two things. One, yesterday of course was the funeral for the firefighter in neighboring Loudoun County who unfortunately passed away in the house explosion that we all are familiar with and talked about at our last meeting, but just want to again recognize him, his family, the Fire and Rescue Department in Loudoun, and our own Fire and Rescue Department who were
heavily present at yesterday's funeral and our one public safety family. And so I know they're continuing to grieve that loss if we could keep them in our thoughts and prayers. And then secondly, I had an opportunity with Supervisor Walkinshaw and former Chairman Bolivar and Supervisor Penny Gross to attend John Mason's memorial service on Saturday in Fairfax City. And of course, John Mason was a former mayor of Fairfax City, but somebody who was heavily involved in regional affairs throughout Northern Virginia. And it was a great service. A lot of great speakers talking about the legacy that John Mason has left. both in Fairfax City and in Fairfax County, and the great relationship that we have with the city of Fairfax, largely due to John Mason's work and cooperation over many years of regional partnership.
And so if we could continue to keep John Mason, his family, our friends in the city of Fairfax, and our thoughts and prayers, that would be appreciated. And with that, I'm happy to recognize any other board members. Supervisor
Herdy. Uh, yes, Mr. Chairman, uh, sad to announce the passing of Reverend Alan Farley on February 8th. He was a West Springfield high school graduate. Uh, Alan loved a civil war reenactment, something he did proudly since 1979. His love of history was only outmatched by his love for family and for his faith. Uh, Reverend Farley spent the last 40 years doing missionary work and preaching to those at the reenactments and in the community. He served as camp commander and as Virginia Division Chaplain for the Appomattox Rangers. He was known to be kind, dedicated, good at carpentry, and passionate in all walks of life. He's gonna be missed, I ask that we keep Reverend Farley's family and friends in our thoughts and prayers.
Thank you, Supervisor Herity, Supervisor Walkinshaw. Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Sad to share the passing of Ken Hartman. And Ken was an original resident of Ravensworth Farm, one of the handful of original residents left there. He unfortunately passed away on February 7th of this year at the age of 96. Ken was a Navy veteran, an engineer, a longtime active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Annandale. I knew him through his work for many, many years on the Ravensworth Farm Civic Association where he was one of the few folks willing to serve as treasurer, which is the most difficult job on a civic association, the one job you can't mess up, but he was an incredible asset to our community in Ravensworth Farm and broader in Fairfax County.
He's survived by his wife, Ruth, who's also a close friend of mine, and you all probably remember a few years ago reading newspaper articles about Ruth because she was the longest serving election official in Fairfax County, one of the longest serving in the country. Decades and decades of service as an election official at the Ravensworth precinct. So I hope my colleagues, community can join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to Ruth and the entire Hartman family in light of their loss. Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Thank you very much.
