Good morning everyone and welcome to our board meeting of May sixth, twenty twenty five. Uh this is our shortened uh markup uh meeting and we'll have a series of actions coming up in a moment. Uh but before we turn to that, um gonna begin this meeting the way we begin every meeting, which is asking if my colleagues have anyone that they would like to keep in our thoughts and prayers, and let me start with Supervisor Walkinshaw.
Um thank you mister Chairman. I'm I'm sad to share the loss of uh longtime Burke legend Glenn Howard Curtis, who passed away on May third at the age of ninety-four. Uh Glenn was born in the Marshall House. It's the home of his great uncle John Marshall, who was the first postmaster of Burke. He attended Burke Elementary School, which is now the uh historic White Oaks property. Uh, Glenn and his brother Marshall were charter members of the Burke Volunteer Fire Department in nineteen forty eight. Uh the equipment at the time consisted of a water pumper which could hold several hundred gallons mounted on a nineteen thirty-four Ford chassis known as Old Red. If you want to see a picture of that, they have one on the wall at the Burke Fire Station.
It's pretty cool. Uh the Curtis brothers managed the fire department over the years, um including the paid and and volunteer members. And I met Glenn last year. at our um soldiers of Howry Field Memorial event because he was one of the firefighters who responded to the tragedy at Howry Field on June first, nineteen sixty seven, uh as the board knows, but for folks in the audience, on that day, nineteen sixty seven, six soldiers were killed when a flagpole they were erecting was hit by a gust of wind and struck a nearby power line. Uh Glenn returned every year and uh we're scheduled to have that event on May thirty first this year. Uh and unfortunately Glenn won't be with us in person, but I know he will be with us in spirit.
Um Glenn retired from the fire department in nineteen eighty two. He was a lieutenant. He's survived by a large and loving family. His favorite hobby was splitting wood, which he continued right up until his final year at the age of 94. So I just ask that we keep uh the Curtis family in our thoughts and prayers today. Uh next, I'm also sad to share the loss of Lieutenant Colonel Robert Bob Lee Jenks, uh, who passed away on April 26th. Uh Um Lieutenant Colonel Jenks uh was a the longtime Burke Nursery and Garden Center assistant manager, so the Burke community uh knew him very well. He joined the Army in 1959. He and his wife Betty uh traveled the world in the Army, raising their family in Germany, Texas, Utah, and finally settling here in Fairfax County.
Uh Lieutenant Colonel Colonel Jenks devoted himself to a life of service and had a distinguished military career. I'm gonna and I'm gonna read all of it 'cause I think it's important. Uh he was an airborne artillery officer, a jungle warfare expert, a defense intelligence agency, imagery intelligence officer. a recruiter and adjutant for twenty two years. He served two terms in Vietnam from nineteen sixty eight to nineteen seventy one, where he became known as a warrior who faced the challenges of war with unwavering resolve and integrity. He earned the presidential unit citation, two meritorious service medals, four bronze star medals, two air medals, including citations for twenty five combat aerial missions over Vietnam, three Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, two Vietnam service and campaign ribbons, two Armed Forces Reserve Medals.
Medals and the National Defense Service Medal. He earned one of those air medals for successfully landing an F one hundred surveillance aircraft from the back seat after the pilot was incapacitated, saving both the aircraft and more importantly, the pilot's life. He was an incredible community member here in the county, sports coach, church usher. choir member, dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary of Sorrows, troopmaster on and on and on uh and his loss is an incredible loss uh for our entire community and I ask that we keep his family and all of those in the Burke area who loved him in their in our thoughts and prayers today, Mr Chairman.
