Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our board meeting of May 7th, 2024. Uh, thank you all for uh hearing that buzzer. Uh that guys, this is the the quickest I've seen a room full of mostly high school kids get quiet. So well done, guys. Um, we are here uh this morning, obviously, to do something new in a moment, which is to celebrate um our student athletes. But before we do that, uh we're gonna begin this meeting as we always do with. A moment of silence to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. And at this time, I'm gonna ask my colleagues to think about anyone they would like to uh recognize this morning to keep in our thoughts and prayers. And I'm just gonna start by mentioning one, uh, and that is Donald Craig.
I think a lot of board members knew. Uh Donald passed away uh last month after a long bout with cancer. Uh Donald was a decades-long member of Of the Orange County, California NAACP before moving here to Fairfax County to be near his grown children and live out his golden years, as he would often tell me. He immediately got active here joining the Fairfax County NAACP Advisory Board as well as the board of directors of the Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions and of course the Communities of Trust Committee working closely. uh with our partners at the Fairfax County Police Department. Uh he was a resident of the Springfield District and there will be a uh service to celebrate Donald's life on May sixteenth at eleven A.
M. at the First Baptist Church of Vienna. And if we could keep uh Donald, our NAACP and his family uh this morning in our thoughts and prayers, uh would be appreciated. And at this time let me recognize others, Supervisor Stork.
Thank you, Mr. Chair. And and um Yeah, we all remember People in our community that really made a difference that aren't maybe public figures, but have been just there day in and day out. And and and particularly I wanted to recognize on March 29th that Dee Bodkin lost her battle to cancer. Dee was a beloved Mount Vernon community member. She lived in Holland Hall with her husband, Buddy. Many will know her from when she worked at Straight from the Crate, Holland Hall pastry shop, and maybe most importantly for her many years at the variety store. Anybody who lives in our area. and knows the variety story. So Dee loved to dance, had a wonderful singing voice and was known for greeting everyone with her warm hugs and big smile.
So I just wanted to make sure we all remember the people that have made a difference in so many lives. Thank you.
Thank you. Uh Supervisor Stork, others who would like to be recognized. Uh seeing and hearing no one, uh if all those who are able could rise uh for a moment of silence to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
And please face the flag. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
And before we begin our presentations, I do have a quick announcement. Uh today is National Fentanyl Awareness Day across the country, and in recognition of this day, which of course is to raise awareness about the dangers of illicit fentanyl, the Fairfax County Prevention Coalition is here right outside the entrance to the board auditorium. You may have seen them uh when you came in, they're available uh to today to answer questions and share uh substance use prevention services and resources that we have uh throughout Fairfax County and and of course in our schools and and encourage anyone to stop by, uh visit with them, uh pick up information on things we can be doing uh in the community, including
uh how to detect misuse and also how to uh recognize and and act and intervene in the uh reversing of an overdose. And so unfortunately uh still a challenge in this community and across the country. Um I do want to thank our Fairfax County Prevention Coalition, which is led by our CSB as part of the county's opioid response. Um and the Fairfax Uh Prevention Coalition is a partnership of parents, youth, schools, healthcare providers, government agencies, law enforcement, faith-based organizations, media, nonprofits, businesses, policymakers, and volunteers working together to combat substance misuse in our community.
