Morning everyone and welcome to our board meeting of November nineteenth, twenty twenty four. And we're gonna begin uh our board meeting as we always do, which is uh with the Pledge of Allegiance. Uh but before we stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, we're going to uh ask if anyone would like to be uh kept in our thoughts and prayers this morning, and I'm gonna mention a few folks uh and then I'm going to recognize uh my colleagues if there's any anyone they would like mentioned and and I'm gonna start with um kind of the obvious one which is our our hearts go out to uh Congressman Connolly uh right now with his recent uh announcement of a cancer diagnosis and I've had a chance to talk to Jerry as I know uh many of my colleagues have and uh he's a a really strong Irish guy as we know um and so he is ready uh for this fight is
undergoing chemotherapy and uh we're gonna keep track of his progress and certainly Uh wish him and his family well and his staff uh who is uh working double overtime uh to make sure that the constituents of the eleventh district continue uh to get the services that they expect and uh certainly Jerry is close to everything we do here uh in Fairfax County as a former chairman. uh and strong advocate for us on the hill and so we will uh continue to monitor that but keep Jerry uh in our thoughts and prayers as as we move forward. And then secondly I want to mention uh two other individuals. Um first Pam Pelto. Um I must uh sadly convey the news that our retired assistant county attorney Pam Pelto passed away last Tuesday, November twelfth after
A brave fight with cancer. And Pam was an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, received her law degree from Catholic University. As her first legal job, she served as a legal intern in the county attorney's office under the guidance of now retired Judge Jan Brody. Uh who I know all my colleagues on the board know well. Uh following her law school graduation, Pam served for twenty-nine years in the county attorney's office as an assistant county attorney in the land use section. Pam was a recognized expert in multiple fields and taught seminars throughout the state. She excelled at finding practical solutions to highly complex land use transactions, which is how many of us at the board Uh she was a mentor to her colleagues and always anxious to share her expertise to advance the county's best interest.
Uh of course, with all the years she had in the county, she had many colorful stories of cases she had litigated, uh demonstrating that the practice of land use law isn't always dry, uh, but can be exciting. Uh on a personal level, Pam raised three sons while working in the county attorney's office, and they were familiar faces I know at many of the county attorney uh office celebrations. Most recently, her sons attended. And the ongoing warmth and devotion of their relationship was obvious. And and I know this has hit the uh county attorney's office hard, but really all of our uh county staff members who had an opportunity uh like I did and many of you did uh to work directly with Pam Pelto over a lot of years.
And so if we could keep uh her family uh in our thoughts and prayers, that would be appreciated. And then lastly uh Uh we lost another uh real hero in our community and Gary Mather. Uh Gary was a philanthropist and ANOVA Health Foundation board member. Uh over the past two decades, Gary and his wife Tina have generously donated to vital ANOVA programs and initiatives transforming health care across our region. Gary's journey at ANOVA began as an engaged community member, evolving from a grateful patient to a dedicated partner with a shared vision and commitment to improving patient care and access in advanced cancer treatments. In 2020, the ANOVA Shar Cancer Center opened the Mather Proton Therapy Center, Northern Virginia's first Proton Therapy Center treatment center, largely funded by Gary and his family.
They led the gift making for this cutting edge therapy accessible for pediatric and adult oncology patients in our community.
