Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our Board of Supervisors meeting of October 10th, 2023. And as we always do, uh, in a moment, uh, we will begin our board meeting uh with the Pledge of Allegiance, and that will be after uh our moment of silence. And before we rise for a moment of silence in the Pledge of Allegiance, I'm gonna ask my colleagues uh if they have anyone they would like to keep uh in our thoughts and prayers this. Uh first, um I think obviously all of us are in shock uh over what's happening in the Middle East and the devastating violence that is occurring uh in Israel and Palestine, including a lot of kidnapping of family members, including uh one of our own uh W. T. Woodson graduate, Abby Awn, who's lived in Israel since 2015.

And we know that uh these attacks are affecting a lot of folks uh in our community and for our uh Jewish community I know this has been described by many as Israel's nine eleven attack. Uh I think it feels that way for uh so many in our community and there are hundreds and hundreds of deaths that have already been reported as a result of this violence and we want to keep uh our Middle Eastern friends and more importantly uh for us, their families and the people that are connected to them uh in Fairfax County and our thoughts and prayers. Uh secondly and tragically on October fourth, uh there was a campus shooting that occurred at Morgan State University. And this also hits close to home. Uh just given the tragedies that you know have happened all over the country at at our universities.

So many of our parents and family members who have kids away at school uh obviously very concerned about this and Um the saddest uh you know, testament to this is the fact that all the students at Morgan State University uh have suffered because of the violent actions of a few, including canceled events and football games and homecomings and all the things that our kids should be excited about uh this time of year. And so if we can keep uh Morgan State University and the victims of that tragedy uh in our thoughts and prayers. Uh in addition Uh I'd like us to keep praying for firefighter uh Lasevka. Uh for those of you who may or may not know. Um he's been transferred to Shepherd Rehab Center in Georgia for care after spending the past month in Faroaks Hospital and Inova hospital battling Goulian Barre syndrome.

And firefighter Lisevka started out as a volunteer at the age of sixteen with the Greater Manassas Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Shenandoah Mountain Rescue Group. Uh he recently married firefighter Shannon Martin. Within twenty four hours of regaining his ability to speak and swallow. They celebrated in a small ceremony at Innova Fairfax Hospital on October first. And if we could please keep them both uh in our thoughts and prayers as well as the rest of our fire and rescue department family. And finally Um I was sad to hear of the passing on September seventeenth of Joe Galdo. Uh Joe Galdo ran against me for chairman of the Board of Supervisors in twenty nineteen. Uh and that's how I had an opportunity to meet him and his family and always found him to be a thoughtful and intelligent person.

Uh while we didn't agree on many issues, uh we certainly had a passion for improving Fairfax County and the way that we thought would be most effective and I think all of us always respect uh anyone who steps up to run for public office and the sacrifice that they and their family make. And so if we could keep uh Joe Galdo uh in our thoughts and prayers and thank him and his family uh for his contributions to Fairfax County. Uh with that, uh, we'll recognize other board members, uh Vice Chairman Groves.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. On September twenty third, we lost Alvin Fuchsman. Um Al Folksman lived in Mason district for decades before he and his wife Dottie a few years ago moved to Greenspring Village in the Frank County district. Um Al was a um police officer and law enforcement professor administrator in Northern Virginia. He actually was twenty-seven years on the Arlington County Police Department, although he lived in Fairfax County.
