Good morning uh everyone and welcome to our board meeting of September twenty fourth, twenty twenty four. And we are gonna begin uh our meeting as we always do, uh which is with a moment of silence to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Uh but before uh those are able to uh rise to do that, let me ask my colleagues if they have anyone uh they would like to keep in our thoughts and prayers this morning. Supervisor Lusk.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Um uh please keep in your thoughts and prayers the family of Julio Cesar Fasasi, a Franconia district resident who was walking along Franconia District Road near Elder Avenue when he was struck and killed by a car. Uh he was loved by his

thank you, Mr. Chairman. Thank you, Supervisor Lusk. And as we know, uh in the past two weeks we've lost a number of people uh sadly due to pedestrian accidents and and one of the items in our carryover budget today is increased funding for bicycle and pedestrian uh safety uh consistent with the board's goal of achieving a hundred million dollars towards bicycle and pedestrian safety initiatives and this is just another example of why that's so important um as is continued education uh both to our driving public and to our pedestrians about uh the rules of the road. Um it's gonna take more than infrastructure, it's gonna take all of us uh to prevent these deaths from occurring that are are needless uh and preventable in most cases if people would just take a moment, uh as our county uh campaign for pedestrian safety says, take a moment uh to be more aware of your surroundings, both if you're a pedestrian and a motorist, particularly if you're traveling in high concentrations areas of pedestrian activity.

school zones, uh some of the areas that are very sensitive uh in the county. And so one death is too many, but this past uh two weeks has been uh particularly tough for us in the county, especially uh since we were making so much good progress in preventing uh pedestrian fatalities uh in the county up until uh two weeks ago. Supervisor Waffenshaw. Um thank you, Mr. Chairman. Unfortunately, continuing with that um theme, um wanna share the passing of Oscar Daniel Martinez Granados uh of Woodbridge, who uh was killed on Old Keen Mill Road near the intersection of Ainsworth Avenue. Um this one was particularly difficult to learn about because that intersection of old Ke Old Keen Mill and Ainsworth. uh is one that we have been that crosswalk rather is one that we've been working with VDOT on to make some improvements uh for some time now.

We're actually in the process of acquiring some right away to to do that. I don't know that those improvements would have prevented this.

You know, this is not an announcement that you want to join with your colleagues, but we had a fatal on Route Twenty nine in Centerville where Tracy Rowan, a male of fifty six of Centerville, um, was struck. It was dark. There's not lights on that part of twenty nine. So um, you know, thoughts and prayers for his family. Thank you. Thank you, Supervisor Smith. Supervisor Pouching.

Mr Chairman, unfortunately, um joining with my colleagues on September twenty first, um and this was in the morning uh eight forty two AM, uh Junkook eighty of Vienna was struck. Um entering the crosswalk, uh a lighted intersection, um, a car going to Oakton shopping center. And so as the chairman said, it really does take all of us, the engineering, the enforcement, the education, um, but just remembering that we share the roads, especially for our more more vulnerable pedestrians.
