I will read this into the record and then I will ask for a motion. This is the National American Indian Heritage Month, November 2024. Whereas the history and the culture of our great nation has been significantly influenced by American Indians and indigenous people. And whereas the contribution of the American Indian has enhanced the freedom, prosperity, and greatness of America today. And whereas their customs and traditions are respected and celebrated as part of a rich legacy throughout the United States. Whereas Native American Awareness Week
began in 1976 and recognition was expanded by Congress and approved by President George Bush in August 1990, designating the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. And whereas in honor of the nation's American Indian Heritage Month, community celebrations, as well as numerous cultural, artistic, educational, and historic activities are held throughout the nation. Therefore, we welcome Thomas Aquina. I'm saying it wrong. Is Thomas here? I wouldn't even close. I'm sorry. Aqualina. Thank you. A 2019 graduate of Loudoun County High School and a tribal member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians to accept the proclamation on behalf of the town of Leesburg's community.
Therefore, I proclaim that the mayor and the council of the town of Leesburg in Virginia do hereby recognize November as National American Indian Heritage Month and urge all citizens to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities proclaimed this 12th day. Whereas Thomas Wayne Downs was also known as Tommy Downs by his friends and family, was a lifetime resident of Leesburg, Virginia. who passed away in September of 2024, and whereas Thomas Wayne Downs attended Loudoun County High School and worked at the National Conference Center, formerly known as the Xerox Document Center, for 38 years. And whereas Thomas Wayne Downs was a member of the Leesburg United Methodist Church and a Leesburg Moose Lodge number 1041.
