So this proclamation is for Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, 2025. Whereas January 27, 2005, 25 serves as a commemoration of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Whereas the Holocaust was the state-sponsored systematic persecution and annihilation of the Jewish people by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. And whereas while Jews were the primary victims with 6 million murdered, many more demographic groups were targeted for destruction, decimation, and oppression. Whereas the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments, and whereas we the people of the town of Leesburg should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution, and tyranny,
And whereas we, the people of the town of Leesburg, should actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of individual freedom in a just society. Therefore, proclaim that the mayor and the council of the town of Leesburg in Virginia, hereby recognize Rabbi Neal Tao of the congregation Shorah Shalom for accepting this proclamation in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of the survivors as well as the rescuers and the liberators, and further proclaim that we, as citizens of the town of Leesburg, should work to promote human dignity and confront hate whenever and wherever it occurs. Rabbi, would you join me over here for just a moment? We're very honored that you're here today. This is the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust, and we're losing many of the survivors, and so the stories are all the more important that we recognize and remember such a horrible and horrific event. So we are, on the town council, we are pleased here to present this to you today and send our regards to your congregation and hope that an occasion like this never happens again. But we have to be vigilant and we have to keep on it. Would you like to say a few words?
Allow me just to share my appreciation with Mayor Burke and the council and to take a moment to rededicate ourselves both to the memories of those who were so brutally taken and also to rededicate ourselves to the mission of creating a society of justice, blessing, and tolerance.
