The first one is the 150th anniversary of the Providence Baptist Church. And it is whereas Providence, and this one's a long one, bear with me. Whereas Providence Baptist Church stands as a sacred institution rooted in faith, perseverance, and community, and for a century and a half has served as a spiritual anchor for generations of Leesburg and Loudoun County. in Leesburg and Loudoun County, whereas in 1874, seeing the need for religious training in the African American community, Reverend Harvey Johnson, first pastor of the Providence Baptist Church, led a revival service at the Bailey School Society of Leesburg, now known as the Bailey's Institute.
And whereas in 1875, Mr. I. Cook and his wife, Miss Franny B. Nickens, purchased the 40 by 160 lot on Church Street, and the church was constructed. With the property paid, the deed for the church was transferred to the trustee, Reverend Johnson on June 7th, 1875. And whereas for 150 years, Providence Baptist Church has been well served by the distinguished and gifted pastors and clergy, including Reverend Simon Peter Fisher, Reverend D.A. Henderson, Reverend E.D. Tyler, Reverend Francis E. Pree, Reverend McCreary, Reverend H.M. Chapman, Reverend Houston Brooks, Reverend J.E. Morris, Reverend Dr. Herbert C. Love, Jr., and the current pastor, Reverend Corey Galt, who ministers to the needs of the congregation and extends compassion and service to the broader community through worship, outreach, education, and fellowship.
Whereas Providence Baptist Church has significantly expanded its digital outreach and community presence through live stream services on Facebook and YouTube each Sunday, enhanced worship experience with a dedicated media team and a virtual gathering during COVID pandemic. The church has strengthened community engagement by partnering with the local organizations, such as the Young Kings Movement in Loudoun County, Mobile Hope Laws, and Loudoun Hunger Relief, and actively participated in annual events like Martin Luther King Day of Service and the Berg Family Reunion Juneteenth Celebration. helps maintain a local park through its youth ministry and hosts events like Community Day at Douglas School to support and uplift local residents.
