Let us open tonight's town hall, town council work session of July 22nd, 2024. Our first item for discussion tonight is the Virginia Main Street program.
Mr. Manning. Mr. Manning. Mr. Manning. Mr. Councilor. wanted to highlight a couple of opportunities that we're seeing with our Main Street program. And I will mention that Ms. Wood, as you may or may not know, did have her baby. So you have to put up with me tonight, not her. So I apologize, but Mother and Harvey are doing very fine. So thank you. So the Main Street update, and I will move through this very quickly. Obviously, you're starting to see their logos around the town more often now in different places. Their mission statement, a thriving business community working together. And I think that is probably one of the most critical parts of this. The group is really working with all of the businesses and residents in downtown.
And I want to make that very clear because I know that's a question we get. Is this just a business movement? No. The Leesburg movement is as much about the residents that are downtown as it is for the businesses that are in there as well. We have a nine-member board. We have four officer positions and then four regular board member positions. Then we have an ex officio member, which is Allison from our office. Something I will mention, too, is that role we started out as basically, as you know, being the pretty much the workhorse for the Leesburg movement before it became the Leesburg movement, our main street program. We have now slowly been phasing more and more out of that role to where Allison's role primarily is helping in the advertising, which is what we would do anyway for any of our businesses, but also for downtown.
And then also now sitting as an ex-officio member of the board. Outside of that, the movement is starting to address and handle more things and they are becoming much more sufficient in their workload as they're working with that. one of the projects that you're starting to see hopefully underway fairly soon is the lasted away beautification project this was a project that is funded from a 15 000 grant that was provided to the movement their application they've submitted in june and they found out a couple weeks ago that they did they were successful in receiving that and that is from the virginia department of housing and community development and it is a 15 000 community vitality grant Now of that grant, there is a $7,500 match.
That match can be made up in cash, it can be made up in in-kind services, and it can be made up in volunteer. So I will tell you, our Economic Development Department has committed $1,000 to this. Outside of that, it will be money that is provided through the Main Street Movement organization, the Leesburg Movement, and also with in-kind services that are being provided. So they are looking forward to hopefully getting that. And I will tell you a couple of the things on there. Obviously, COPA has been very involved in this. and they hope to have this completed by the spring of next year so they are looking forward to making that not having a negative impact obviously on a thoroughfare of it but cleaning up that area making it look very appealing and then also giving just an opportunity as pedestrians use that as a cross through between market and loudon street so they're very anxious to see that getting taking place as soon as possible
Wanted to provide one of the opportunities that the Leesburg movement did is they had recently had a town hall. So on May 28th, the Leesburg movement had a town hall and it gave them an opportunity. They do these periodically and I wanted to thank Mayor Burke because she took this as an opportunity to come and sit down and have a listening session where she was listening to the businesses and the residents that were part of this. There was a very good turnout. I think it turned out much better than what was originally anticipated and A couple of the items that were on their list they talked about, these were the key points that came out of that meeting.
