Well, good evening, supervisors, good evening, staff, and good evening, Loudoun. I'd like to call the December 2nd, 2025 Loudoun County Board of Supervisors business meeting to order. Please see the clerk to request one. Tonight, I get the honor of offering comments and leading the prayer of allegiance. For my comments, I just wanna say this. In the past couple of days, there's a good friend of so many of us in Loudoun County whose son, her young son became severely ill. He started vomiting blood. It turns out he had a arterial bleed and he's now in his third surgery in three days.

Last week we had a National Guard member who was shot and killed while performing legal orders. Her name was Sarah Beckstrom. She is from West Virginia. She was only 20 years old. I do wonder where the flags at half-mast for Miss Beckstrom when they were down for other people. I don't see flags down for half-mast for her. I think we should. I have a good friend right now who's going through a very tough divorce. I became a lady in the county who called us for some assistance. I sent her to one of our nonprofits because she has to have a double mastectomy and she didn't have the means to get it done. And yesterday, we had a person that was a pedestrian that was killed. I say all this to say this. The world right now, especially our country, is coarsened.

Our language is coarse. And there is a lot of tension, and there's a lot of anger, and there's a lot of things where people are just not giving one another a little bit of grace. And I would say that during these times, especially during the holidays, you just never ever know what somebody else is going through. They may look okay, they may smile, they may have that mask on that says they're fine. But very, very often, a lot of people are going through things that we just don't realize. And although there is a question of language, especially coming out of the federal government, I speak this to myself as much as to anybody else, to implore all of us to try to just, especially now, offer grace to one another and offer kindness to one another when we can.

Speak words of encouragement. Speak words of honesty. Make sure before you talk you know what you're going to say and why. Because the world is a tough place right now, and people just need a little bit of grace. Would all of you please join me in the Pledge of Allegiance? I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. On a happy note, we have quite a few people in the room tonight who are going to be joining us for the resolution for Erin McClellan. And as she looks around the room, she'll see a lot of familiar faces she hasn't seen in a while. We have some former supervisors, Mr. Higgins, former supervisor and current delegates walking into the room.

Janet Clark is here already, former supervisor from what was the Blue Ridge District. Before I go on and read the consent agenda, I do want to say something about Ms. Clark. Here comes Supervisor Bonfield, hello sir. When I was chair elect, I was elected and I chaired state bodies before, but this is my, here comes Supervisor Buffington, look at that. But I wasn't quite sure of how to run this meeting. And it was Janet Clark. They called me to her house and took out a meeting agenda and went through the agenda with me, talked to me about additions and deletions, talked to me about the consent agenda. Janet Clark and I, at the time, were in different political parties. I have no idea if that's even true anymore, and I'm sure we have some different beliefs, but there was nobody more kind to me when I won this seat than Janet Clark, and my very first meeting that I,

that I got through after going first in the bathroom because I was so nervous I went in the bathroom puked and then walked in the dais and shared a meeting because Janet Clark had called me to her house and told me what to do and I will just never forget that and so I just want to say publicly what I've said to you privately and that's thank you so much.
