What is the purpose of the opening and staff report on the Neighborhood University Relations Committee?

Karen Hardy 3:47
Wonderful. Like to call this meeting to order. Uh we are going to first do some interviews for some committees and commissions. And I just need to make certain from my city clerk, do I have a quorum? Thank you, Councilmember Hardy. Yes, you confirming your quorum. Thank you so much. I appreciate that. Okay. We um We'd like to start with Getting all my paperwork. There we go. We are going to start with our interviews for appointments to the representatives to the neighborhood university relations committee, which we affectionately call NERC. And we will start with residents and we will have a vote and then we will uh there's businesses. And then we will have a vote on that. And uh Rena, are you the one in charge?
Rena Brio 4:42
For us? Yeah, well, I am um orchestrating this, yeah, as the liaison for the NERC, and I wanted to provide a short staff report before we get started so you understand and so the public also understands why we're here today. So on April 8th, the council took action to restructure our neighborhood university relations committee. And thank you, Councilmember Hardy. We call it the NURC, so we may be using that acronym throughout today. Um The committee is now comprised because of the council action of two city council members, two members of Santa Clara University staff, one Santa Clara University student, one old quad resident, and one property owner landlord representative. The restructuring was done for the goal of achieving a more inclusive committee that would represent the diverse interests of promoting collaboration with the various interests and stakeholder groups that really reside with the university and the community that's immediately adjacent.
Rena Brio 5:44
Santa Clara University has designated Sean Collins, Assistant Vice President for University Operations, and Steve Ross, Assistant Dean of Students, as the two staff representatives, and Shay McQue McQueely, who is a senior and also the community development vice president for the associated student government as the student representative. It is requested that among the actions that the council take today is to officially appoint these Santa Clara University designees as part of committee members for the NERC. So, for the two positions that are included for interviews and appointment today are the old Quad resident as well as the property owner landlord representative. And our city clerk's office facilitated the recruitment for those two positions.
Rena Brio 6:39
We did receive five applicants for the property owner landlord representative and 11 applications. For the old quad resident. We as staff screened for the eligibility criteria because there were basic criteria for both. And that meant some of those applicants did not move forward. However, today we have the applicants here to be interviewed and for the council to appoint following the following individuals are intended to be interviewed today. For the position of old quad resident. Note that since the posting of the report, we actually had a couple applicants not confirm and not um attend today. So, and a couple who who explicitly said they were going to withdraw from the process. But today for the old quad resident positions, we have Nicole, I'm sorry, um, we have Chris Castle.
Rena Brio 7:33
Grace Shirella Jensen, Mark Kelsey, and Shang Fang Zen. And I want to point out that uh she actually goes by Jennifer. So we will try to refer to her as Jennifer. Um And After that Recruitment and appointment, the interviews and appointment. There'll be a second round for the council today, and that's for the uh appointment of the property owner landlord committee representative. And the intention of this position is really to represent the perspective of landlords who own rental property in the old quad. That has been an issue of significant interest to the NURC over the years, so we thought it uh a good good thing to actually have someone who um is actually representing properties that are used for rental um
Rena Brio 8:26
There were three applicants of the five that were uh submitted who moved forward. Uh we did have information today that one has withdrawn from the process.
