I sit down and start eating.
And he's got some food in front of him, which he doesn't touch.
And he's just chain-smoking filterless Camel cigarettes and staring out the window.
And after about what felt like an eternity, but probably 10 minutes, I muster up a little courage in my squeaky 17-year-old voice and say, you know, Rutger, everybody says you're just, you know, you've got the monopoly on villains.
exhales right in my face and he says i don't play bad guys which scared the holy hell out of me and of course i was too young to really understand what he meant by that but jump ahead 25 years later i finally got an opportunity to play a serial killer on a show called criminal minds where i played the reaper and i started thinking about what he said and i had lived life enough to kind of
really understand what he meant and the fact that um he he was able to play a villain with a full round set of emotions you know when he stuck that knife into my eye and stared at me he was filled with empathy and you know love and fear and all these things that a lot of you know lesser actors um
don't incorporate into their performances.
So he had this knack for injecting humanity into his villains.
And that becomes scary as hell when you start to watch it.
But in real life, I think he enjoyed the fact that people were afraid of him.
Yeah.
And he kind of reveled in that a little bit.
I wonder how old he was when he passed away.
He was up there, man.
But you know what?
He smoked.
He smoked every day.
Patrick smoked.
I think he said at one point 50, 60 cigarettes a day.
And that shit will catch up to you, man.
