I mean, there's one thing you can be certain of.
You're not going to get that from the king.
He will always respect the people's right, as is vested in them by the constitution, to govern the constitutional direction of the nation.
And that's a special thing.
So, no, the Australian Monarchist League doesn't oppose...
the King saying this at all.
You asked also about why shouldn't we put this argument to the people?
I will briefly touch on an economic reason for doing so.
Based off my numbers, if a republic referendum were to occur in 2028, that would probably cost about $556 million or so, something like that.
Now,
The Australian Republic movement estimates that the only expense we've spent on the royal family in a 13-year period has been $6 million on assisting royal visits.
So simply for the same price of having the referendum and asking the question, we could finance royal visits for the next 1,204 years.
The taxpayer pays, if those numbers are correct, about 3.8 cents a year.
to assist royal visits when they occur.
Conversely, the taxpayer paid $33 for the voice referendum, and that will only go up over time.
I think it's juvenile.
I don't know if it's going to translate on the ground.
And this is my point.
You know, I don't think Australian people want these cheap jibes, if you like.
They want a long-form, considered debate.
