So that's, they do this a lot with people who have PTSD, you know, maybe who have gone to war.
And any kind of loud bang or a car backfire will kind of bring on these really traumatic memories and really traumatic response.
So in a very controlled, safe environment, you are doing this exposure therapy where you're getting them to hear sounds, but it's in a safe environment.
So they stop associating these sounds with this really intense response so they can kind of
function a lot better day to day.
So this is kind of what we're talking about when we do extinction.
Then we have something called operant extinction.
And this is kind of what we're talking about a little bit more here.
So it's where you're getting rid of a reinforced behavior that you have built up and you can eradicate it when the reinforcing consequence is no longer there.
Okay.
An example of this is, let's say,
You're a parent with a child and the child, you always give a child a gift every time you leave the house.
You go to the store and you always buy the child a gift.
And then one time the child doesn't get the gift and the child has an absolute tantrum.
So then you think, oh, I'll just buy the gift because it had a tantrum.
And so now the child has a tantrum.
You buy the gift.
You've paired it perfectly.
Okay.
There's this thing and then your consequence and then the child gets what it wants.
