God, yeah.

Chatabix

They didn't tell people.

Chatabix
Specialist Guest: WW2 Historian Andrew Chatterton

Um, and also there's a fact that they were never called upon.

Chatabix

So a lot of the veterans we talked about were like, well, just, you know, trained really hard and, um, and, and, you know, we lived in the bunker for a bit, but we didn't, we weren't, didn't actually do anything.

Chatabix

So there's no, you know, there's no point in talking about it because they weren't actually, they didn't actually get called upon thankfully to, to, to act.

Chatabix
Specialist Guest: WW2 Historian Andrew Chatterton

So they perceived as they didn't really do anything.

Chatabix
Specialist Guest: WW2 Historian Andrew Chatterton

So, um, and also there's, there's always the possibility that I think probably a very strong possibility that similar units, uh,

Chatabix

might have existed during the Cold War period as well.

Chatabix
Specialist Guest: WW2 Historian Andrew Chatterton

So, for example, the auxiliary units in about 1943

Chatabix
Specialist Guest: WW2 Historian Andrew Chatterton

someone went round and started recording the names and addresses of lots of these auxiliar unit members because now they are a really highly trained asset and you want to keep an eye on where they are just in case you fall upon them if the Russians come for example so that's another reason to keep it all secret because you don't want the Russians finding out that we've got all this stuff prepared as well so

They're so typical of their generation.

So the other thing I should mention about Ken and his dad is that Ken joined because basically he followed his dad one night

Chatabix

to the operational base.

Chatabix

And then Ken's dad had a choice essentially to whether to add him to this list of people that he would have to assassinate or bring him in, bring him into this, this patrol.

Chatabix

So that's the reason that Ken was, but they were, they, you know, Ken saw it as a big adventure.

Chatabix
Specialist Guest: WW2 Historian Andrew Chatterton

His, his dad was a,

Chatabix
Specialist Guest: WW2 Historian Andrew Chatterton

bit more realistic but they never really talked about it because essentially they couldn't talk about it in front of his mum and his dad's wife because she couldn't know when do you talk about it even in the 50s and 60s they were still under the official secret so they couldn't talk about it I'm just thinking how terrible I am at keeping a secret I am awful I've got no willpower

Chatabix

Yeah, and that's why – so my book came out last year, and it's been really well-received.

Chatabix
Specialist Guest: WW2 Historian Andrew Chatterton

It is.

Chatabix
Specialist Guest: WW2 Historian Andrew Chatterton

It is because all this stuff's under our feet, literally.
