In Syria itself, remnants of the Assad regime in Syria last week ambushed and killed dozens of security officers from the new government. The response from some members of the military was brutal, killing hundreds of civilians. Many of the victims were Alawites, a sect perceived to be loyal to the former president. That community now fears it has no safe future in Syria.
