Expression originally comes from the card game Blackjack, but you and I were chatting before we hit the record button for this episode, and we both have never played Blackjack before.

So we're just going to tell you guys that the original meaning, the original literal meaning of Double Down comes from the game Blackjack.

But since Indiana and I don't know about this game, we won't try to fake it and say that we understand.

So let's skip over the origin and just get to the idiomatic meaning.

And the thing that's a little bit difficult to understand with double down is I think in the moment, double down usually has a negative meaning.

It's a negative connotation, a negative sense to it.

However, when time passes and we're looking back, you know, we say hindsight is 2020 like from our present perspective in the present.

If we look back at history, often we can say, oh, yeah, he should have done this or he should have done that because like.

Now we know how things worked out, right?

From our perspective in the present.

So in the moment, sometimes we say doubling down is usually a negative thing.

And it's like, you shouldn't do that.

And you're probably making a mistake by doubling down.

However, when we look back in history, sometimes we can see that doubling down was actually a good decision because

Like maybe, I don't know, the CEO of a company decided to double down and hire more employees.

And maybe all of the shareholders said, that's a terrible idea in this economy.
