And here's why I think that.
The discovery process in this lawsuit revealed that one of the co-founders of Anthropic, Benjamin Mann, did a BitTorrent download of 5 million pirated books, not music, pirated books in 2021 with anthems.
So they were doing not such good things.
Now, in respect of some of those other lawsuits that Anthropic has faced, they settled one of them for one and a half billion dollars.
So Universal Music and a couple of other music publishers collaborating on this $3 billion lawsuit means that they're probably going to get a few billion dollars.
That money should then go off to the artists, one would think.
But I doubt that's going to happen very directly.
But anyway, it was interesting that one of the co-founders was actually using BitTorrent to download all these things.
And they had agreed to do that as part of the way of accessing enough data to do training.
So Anthropic may be able to say, hey, we might have accidentally had our crawlers grab some music, but we didn't even bother tuning for music generation.
What song lyrics and all that other stuff.
The bottom line on this is I think, you know, while there might have been at the early stages, you know, in the BitTorrent example, there might have been some nefarious action.
