So getting an attorney is definitely a way to make sure that everybody is following the correct steps during an interrogation like this.
And Darlene had even said that it was her sisters who were telling her to stop talking, just really looking out for her.
However, I'd be lying if I didn't share the same thought as I'm sure many of you share where it's like if people are lawyering up right after their spouse has gone missing or ends up being murdered, it does look a little bit suspicious or maybe like they have a guilty conscience, right?
Not that it means that they are guilty in any way.
It's just kind of the way it is.
It's perception, right?
And what's the expression?
Perception is reality.
So Darlene would later further explain that in that very moment, she felt like the investigators had started talking to her in a very accusatory way, basically telling her that they knew what game she was trying to play, that they weren't going to be outsmarted by her.
And she said, ultimately, that is what made her decide to lawyer up.
It was nothing about her having a guilty conscience or anything like that.
But I will say, the interrogation clips, they're out there.
Anyone can watch the full, unedited, entire video if they wanted to.
And I can't help but notice that there are many times when the interviewer is telling her that she needs to answer every question to the best of her knowledge.
Not for their best interest, but for her own.
So honestly, it seemed like the investigators were being pretty neutral with Darlene in the beginning, maybe even a little too accommodating.
They weren't storming in guns blazing or treating her like a criminal.
I mean, if anything, it seemed like they were giving her the benefit of the doubt.
So, you know, take that however you will.
But behind the scenes, the detectives were starting to shift gears.
