And without me being specific in my question, what other things should people know about Islam that's important?
I would say people should know one thing, which is that Muslims often go around claiming that Muslims believe in the same God that Christians and Jews believe in, for example.
They will say in order to appeal to Christians that Muslims also believe in Jesus, that Muslims also love Jesus.
I would say that...
Everybody should be aware that Islam is actually a seventh century religion formed in Arabia by somebody who went by his own whims and had no idea about the Bible and what Christians worship.
He simply adopted certain Christian and Jewish beliefs in order to further and create his own religion.
and subjugate populations.
The religion itself worships a god that Mohammed himself basically based on what his pre-Islamic polytheist pagans in his environment, what they worshipped, he blended this god with certain Christian and Jewish aspects and created his own new religion.
This religion mostly is all about what Mohammed himself wants, what he desires.
His young child bride himself said that Allah seems very, very quick to attend to your desires.
That's what his child bride actually said.
The religion itself was established through violent warfare.
It spread mostly to all the places that it spread to within the first and second centuries.
It spread by force through warfare.
A very, very good book I recommend is In God's Path by Robert G. Hoyland.
He wrote extensively about the early spread of Islam.
You can see that Islam spread by force violently wherever it went.
And most Muslims who are Muslims today are simply Muslims because their ancestors were at some point violently converted.
And then they were suppressed and they were told to simply accept whatever they believe in and not to question it.
And I think that if people want to tackle Islam, they should inform themselves on the Quran and the Hadith and the basics of it and then begin discussing with Muslims directly.
