So by the time Kitty finished high school in 1953, New York was changing.
And there were fears over rising crime rates.
Not long after she graduated from high school, her mother was walking home one afternoon and witnessed a shooting in the street in broad daylight.
According to author Kevin Cook, Rachel Genovese practically walked into the shooting.
She was close enough to see the victim's blood filling the sidewalk cracks.
Rachel's one and only experience as a witness to violent crime was more than enough.
She has a whole family to take care of.
And that summer, Vincent bought a small ranch house in New Canaan, Connecticut, and began making arrangements to move the family to the suburbs, about 50 miles north of the city.
He told the rest of the family it's safer there.
