Like any human being, they just want to be understood.
Like most artists are just trying to be understood by their music.
So if you go in there and give them a sense that I care, I'm listening, I see you, I'm not here to catch you out, the interview is going to be so much better.
And I think early on in my career especially there was a real focus on you've got to get the headline, you've got to get the moment that's going to go viral or whatever.
And I happily kind of missed out on so many of those headlines that some of my peers got.
But I think the trade-off was that I got respect and I got repeat interviews and, yeah,
did the kind of interviews that brought out the humanity in people and that was kind of always the goal because they're just normal people.
You know what I mean?
Like they want to have a nice chat and then that's what the fans want as well.
Like if you really love an artist and you watch an interview and you feel like your favourite artist is being diminished or disrespected, that's not a fun feeling for you.
So I found my little niche and I ran with it and it served me very well.
Yeah, it helped that I started when I was so young.
So when I started, I worked for a company that made syndicated radio shows.
So I grew up listening to a show called Take 40 Australia with Barry Bissell.
He hosted it when I was a kid.
And then I eventually wrote for that show.
And before I then went on to host that show, I would do all of the interviews.
So I was a copywriter by day.
I wrote radio ads for that same company.
And then they started getting me to do the interviews.
