I mean, to me, this is a big day in the Jays' season.
Obviously, the Scherzer injury...
Maybe we kind of saw it coming.
He wasn't able to get out of the third inning, and you really can't, especially when you're working through the bullpen, you really can't have a guy going short in the way that Max was, and clearly the health reasons were underlying there.
I think the Jays have actually done a pretty good job of managing the turbulence of the early part of the year.
The number of injuries, the bullpen situation with Hoffman, and I also want to credit a few people here.
John Schneider, Pete Walker, Hoffman himself, and Varlin.
Because as uncomfortable as all of that has been, Hoffman has already shown now he can pitch earlier in the game and do well with it.
Varlin has been phenomenal.
And they've all handled this thing incredibly professionally.
It is difficult to change out a guy that's been an all-star closer who's pitched for Team USA in March, and here we are a month later and he's lost his job as a closer.
I want to just, and you both know this, but I want for our listeners and viewers to understand this.
The change was made as quickly as is practical in Major League Baseball.
You are not going to change out a proven closer before the end of April very often.
JOHN SCHLANDER DID IT, HE DID IT RESPECTFULLY, HE GAVE JEFF HOFFMAN PLENTY OF CHANCES, AND HOFFMAN, TO HIS CREDIT, WAS AN ABSOLUTE PRO THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS.
